The most powerful New Yorker in public education has just sent a message
to the United Federation of Teachers: Back Bill Thompson for mayor in
2013. This is just breathtaking, coming from the person responsible for oversight of all education policy in the Empire State — public and private, pre-K to post-grad, and everything in between. In between, of course, includes teacher-evaluation policies, charter schools,
the future of mayoral control of New York City’s 1.1-million-pupil
public-school system — all items of critical interest to the UFT, an
organization with outsized influence in municipal politics. Thompson strategist Jonathan Prince, meanwhile, castigated rival Council Speaker Chris Quinn‘s recent mayoral-style press conference
as “yet another attempt by the Quinn campaign to portray her as
mayor-in-waiting, to suggest her election is inevitable.” A spokesman
for a third candidate, Bill de Blasio, piled on:
“Speaker Quinn has been standing so close to the mayor for seven years,
his commissioners probably can’t tell the difference.”

24 Hours After Bowing to Hillary He is Writing His Own BookHarperCollins is Owned by Murdoch's News Corp
In a radio interview, Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed back against a report that said he would not run for president in 2016 if Hillary Clinton runs, saying he is focused on running the state government, The Buffalo News writes: In negotiating with HarperCollins, Cuomo was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose clients include President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Cuomo said he’s not discussing “presidential politics” behind the scenes or publicly, insisting in a radio interview that he isn’t gauging whether Clinton is going to ultimately run in 2016.

Publisher Is Backing Off a Book About Cuomo in Favor of One Written by Him(NYT) HarperCollins is retreating from plans to publish a book by a political columnist and is working with the governor on his own project. The proposed journalistic biography, by Fredric U. Dicker, a political
columnist for The New York Post, had been hotly anticipated in the
state’s political world since Mr. Dicker announced the project last April.
The book was to be published by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, in
2013, and Mr. Cuomo had agreed to cooperate with the project. But Mr. Cuomo’s relationship with * HarperCollins confirmed Cuomo
will write “a full and frank account” about his private life and the
“profound moments” of his first term in office, including signing
gay-marriage legislation.
Mr. Dicker has since soured, and the
governor’s ambitions for his own book, which he had initially seemed to
suggest would be some sort of monograph about governing, have apparently
increased. In a news release
late Monday, issued after The New York Times reported the publisher’s
change of plans, HarperCollins said that Mr. Cuomo’s memoir “will be a
full and frank look at his public and private life.” At the time he announced his intention to write a book about Mr. Cuomo,
Mr. Dicker had enjoyed a close relationship with the governor, praising
his tenure in print and on the air, hosting him as a frequent guest on
his radio talk show, and landing scoops for his column from the governor’s administration. But in recent months, Mr. Dicker has been deeply critical of Mr. Cuomo over gun control and hydraulic fracturing. And Mr. Cuomo has not appeared on Mr. Dicker’s radio show in months.Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, and the publisher said Dicker remains under contract for his book.
