The city’s Board of Elections has suspended an employee Stephen Graves who is a top official in the Queens Republican Party after being notified that he was caught on tape soliciting a $25,000 “finder’s fee” from a company competing for a $65 million contract in 2009.  “He was recommending the use of a particular lobbyist,” said one source. “In exchange for that he wanted a finder’s fee.” The lobbyist, who was not identified, was supposed to receive $250,000 a year for five years, the source said.

More on Jay Golub

Golub GSP Consulting was $4,500 by the Ragusa' faction of the Queens GOP against the Haggerty faction. Steven Graves was running in the 25AD for State Committee as part of the Ragusa faction in 2009.  Also working for GSP is Dennis Gallager who the NYP calls the Perv pol lands Qns. lobbyist gig  Gallagher, who stepped down in 2008 after pleading guilty to sexual-abuse charges stemming from accusations that he raped a woman in his Middle Village office, is listed on a city government database as an “additional lobbyist” with GSP Consulting, a Sunnyside-based firm run by Jay Golub, a dentist. Judges Protect Judges

NYT Says That Gonzalez's "violation of ethics rules has badly undermined trust in his judgment. He should relinquish his role as a presiding justice."

Judicial Conduct Unbecoming (NYT) New York courts may be reforming hiring practices so that jobs are not given to favored friends and relatives, but one justice has been given a pass for doing so. But that did not stop Luis Gonzalez, the top judge in the appellate division that covers Manhattan and the Bronx, from treating openings in his part of the court system as personal patronage. A state agency that polices judges’ conduct issued a highly critical report about Justice Gonzalez, yet he remains a presiding justice. * Judges’ jobs injustice(NYP Ed) If you’re a New York City judge and get caught breaking court rules, not to worry: The state’s Commission on Judicial Conduct is only too happy to give you a pass.

The New Teflon Don John Liu Soft Ball NY1 Interview
In a puff interview (A Artz wet dream) of the comptroller last week by Inside City Hall's Errol Louis in the 9th minute of a 12 minute interview Liu was asked about the scandal involving his campaign fund raising.  Interviewer Louis asked: Since the comptroller disapproval rating have doubled does he think his effectiveness is compromised.  Liu said his office is working as hard as ever for the people of New York, and gave examples.  The follow question that Louis asked was very strange: Louis said "questions in the political community questions were being asked of why was the the federal government involved in offering questionable payments to a campaign."  Liu volunteered and Louis agreed: "an undercover sting operation." Liu also added, "I can only imagine there be more allegations in the coming months?" Louis never asked what additional allegations the comptroller was talking about.  It is funny the records don't who Louis questing the FBI sting against Tony Seminerio,  Brian Mclaughlin or William Boyland. NYT Bloomberg Have There Own Truth

New Jersey's governor gets called out in the Times for offering tax breaks, but Bloomberg sounds like a white knight (nah) (Atlantic Yards Review) In a front-page New York Times article two days ago, Christie Leaning on Tax Subsidies in Hunt for Jobs, New York Times development reporter Charles Bagli took a tough look at New Jersey  Gov. Chris Christie's approval of "a record $1.57 billion in state tax breaks for dozens of New Jersey’s largest companies after they pledged to add jobs." But the nut graph gave way too much credit to New York: The generous distribution of subsidies in New Jersey has come under fire from government-reform groups, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York City and some New Jersey landlords, who contend that the programs are an expensive and ineffective form of assistance to wealthy corporations.

Bloomberg Double Talk on Tax Breaks

Bloomberg offered developer Bruce Ratner $100 million--and then nearly $100 million more, later--for his Atlantic Yards arena-cum-skyscrapers project, leveraged by moving the basketball Nets from NJ to Brooklyn.

In an essay for CBS News, Morley Safer, a “60 Minutes” correspondent, recounted his colleague’s career thusly:
Wallace took to heart the old reporter’s pledge to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. He characterized himself as “nosy and insistent.”
So insistent, there were very few 20th century icons who didn’t submit to a Mike Wallace interview. He lectured Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, on corruption. He lectured Yassir Arafat on violence. He asked the Ayatollah Khoumeini if he were crazy. He traveled with Martin Luther King (whom Wallace called his hero). He grappled with Louis Farrakhan. And he interviewed Malcolm X shortly before his assassination.
