Who is Destroying NYC's Economy?

"America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because 'We the People' have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents." - President Obama

President Obama's speech demanded that the federal government’s leaders grow-up and make government work. There is not a single story in the New York papers about fixing the leadership deficit in our own city and state, but there are a few stories that show how destructive the City’s leaders have become.

Today’s Daily News investigative story Pols: Getting cozy with Quinn required to get bills passed is another example how our current leadership uses government resources to build their careers over public interests such as rebuilding the City’s economic base. The controlling leadership in our dysfunctional city and state governments does not allow qualified leaders such as Obama, who know how to rebuild our economy, to function or succeed.

Up until now New York has been a great economic city because of the superlative work of past generations. Thomas Jefferson made New York the banking center of the world when he defeated Alexander Hamilton's attempts to establish a national bank in Washington – 200 years later the greed of the NY Banks and the bailout has made DC the financial capitol of the world. DeWitt Clinton made our city the trading capital of the world when he defeated the City establishment and built the Erie Canal.

Two other stories in today’s papers also indicate how political self-interest is more important, even to those running on platforms of fixing the City's economy. As thousands of poor New Yorkers have lost their homes to the subprime mortgage crisis, two of Bloomberg's challengers have accepted money from the embattled, real estate scamming Toussie family. THOMPSON GIVES BACK TOUSSIE $$ *** Weiner got Toussie cash in mayor bid. Before Bush gave and rescinded a presidential pardon, Isaac Toussie pleaded guilty in 2001 to lying to the Department of Housing and Urban Development to get mortgages for unqualified home buyers.
Political Trends: New York Pols are behind the curve not only because of the Clinton defeat, but due also to a lack of leadership.

Today’s Impertinent Question: to Kathryn Wylde, President & CEO of the Partnership for New York City Does it hurt your efforts that you and your establishment friends ignore the fact that our city’s leaders don’t have the skills, or are too corrupt to rebuild New York’s economic base? Do you think that as Obama begins to reform the way Washington does business, that if NY does not do the same, we will have any chance to rebuild our economic base? Last November you worked with the leaders of the City’s establishment to extend term limits for the City’s political leaders. You must now work with them to fix NY government and politics or it will destroy all the wealth your friends have amassed here.
